Correct Pronunciation (shú)
According to the Dictionary of Correct Characters (Zhengzitong), the character for shu is synonymous with shu (legume) and shu (father's younger brother). The Book of Han (Hanshu) records that millet of the shu variety was used to pay taxes.
Note: The character shu mentioned here is identical in meaning to the character for legume. Additionally, shu also refers to one's father's younger brother. In ancient times, the character was written as shu, composed of the characters for above and small. Later, the radical for hand was added to form the character for father's younger brother. There is also a variant written with the inch radical. Adding the grass radical at the top results in the character for legume.
