According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to those that provide defense. The character shape is composed of the components for livestock and dog.
The Erya (Erya) states: Those that have four feet and are covered with fur are called beasts (shou).
The Book of Documents (Shangshu) describes: All the wild beasts dance in sequence, and the officials are truly harmonious and accordant.
The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) records: The Beast Officer is in charge of using nets to capture wild beasts and distinguishing their names and classifications.
The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) also mentions six types of beasts. The commentary by Zheng Sinong explains: The six beasts are elk, deer, bear, roe deer, wild boar, and rabbit.
The Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili) records: A wooden stand is placed to its south, facing south. The beast meat is placed upon it, with the head facing east. The commentary states: Beast refers to dried meat.
