Book of Odes (Shijing): Sprinkle and sweep the courtyard and the interior of the house. Also refers to Naosao, a style of hair bun. Three Dreams Record (Sanmengji): Naosao is like the braided hair style or the falling horse bun. Tang poetry says: Still combing the Naosao bun to imitate the styles of the palace. Pronounced zao (fourth tone). Same meaning. Analects (Lunyu): To be capable of sprinkling water and sweeping the floor, responding to calls, and observing the etiquette of advancing and retreating is sufficient. The original form of the character is written as sao (soil component). Also interchangeable with the character sao (disturbed).
