Book of Rites (Liji), Miscellaneous Records (Zaji): The hearse of a feudal lord is decorated with a silk fringe, that of a great officer is decorated with hempen cloth, and that of a scholar is covered with reed mats.
Commentary: A hearse is the decoration for a vehicle carrying a coffin to a funeral. When the coffin is placed in the hearse for the funeral, it is called a hearse; when it is carried to the burial site, it is called a carriage.
