Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Pronounced rong.
Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Collection (Yunhui): Pronounced rong.
Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced rong.
Broad Rhymes states it is a fine fabric. Also written as a variant form (róng). Note: Another edition of the Broad Rhymes states that the animal is fierce, and that the variant form is the fine fabric, distinguishing the two meanings. The Correct Rhymes states it is a species of primate whose hair can be used to make fabric. It is likely that because its hair can be used to make fabric, the fine fabric came to be called by this name.
Also, Collected Rhymes states it is the name of a beast. It is a species of primate. Its hair is soft and long and can be used for mats.
Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao) states it resembles a monkey but is larger, with yellow-red hair. It lives in the valleys of the far south. Its skin is used to make saddle pads.
Amplified Elegantia (Piya) states the creature belongs to the ape and macaque family. It is agile and skilled at climbing trees, similar in size to an ape, with a long tail that is gold in color. People today call it the golden-thread. It lives in the deep mountains of the Sichuan gorges. People shoot it with poisoned arrows to obtain its tail, which is used for sleeping mats and seat cushions. The creature loves its tail dearly; if it is struck by a poisoned arrow, it will bite off its own tail and throw it away, loathing it as the source of its great distress. This creature is also known as a macaque (náo).
