Pronounced rong. According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters), it refers to the lotus flower. As cited in the Li Sao (Encountering Sorrow) by Qu Yuan: Gathered lotus flowers to make a garment. The commentary notes that lotus flower refers to the lotus blossom.
Also, according to the Yunhui (Collection of Rhymes), the wood hibiscus is also known as the frost-resisting flower and the wood lotus.
Also, according to the Yunbu (Supplement to Rhymes), pronounced wang. As cited in the Qiyu (Seven Allegories) by Xu Gan: Suspending a bright pearl from a long case, it illuminates the night like the sun. The dark hair resembles dark mist, and the gorgeous color surpasses that of the lotus.
