Shen Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Grass (cǎo) Character: Rang Kangxi Stroke Count: 23 Page 1069, Entry 09 Ancient script. According to the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), pronounced rang (rising tone). According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to the mioga ginger. Another name is fu-ju (a variant plant name). The Commentary on the Materia Medica (Bencao Zhu) notes that people today call the red variety mioga ginger and the white variety fu-ju. It is said that the red variety is better for eating, while the white variety is better for medicinal use, though they are the same species. In the Rhapsody on the Shanglin Park (Shanglin Fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is mentioned as purple ginger and mioga ginger. The Commentary on the Quick Literacy Text (Jijiupian Zhu) states that the mioga ginger has stems and leaves like ginger; its roots are fragrant and crisp, and can be pickled. It is also used to treat toxic conditions. The Commentary on the Poems of Liu Zongyuan states that mioga ginger prefers shade, and those that grow under trees are particularly fine. Therefore, in the Rhapsody on a Life of Retirement (Xianju Fu) by Pan Yue, it is said that the mioga ginger relies on the shade. Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced jiang (level tone). It is the same as the character xiang. Pronounced dang (level tone). It is the same as the character rang. Refer to the detailed entries for the characters xiang and rang. Textual research: In the Rhapsody on Zixu (Zixu Fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is recorded as purple ginger and mioga ginger. We have carefully corrected this to Rhapsody on the Shanglin Park (Shanglin Fu) according to the original text.
