According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to curved horns.
In the Er-ya, Explication of Domestic Animals (Er-ya Shi Chu), it is stated: "A sheep with three horns is called a quan, or a yan." The commentary notes that quan means curled.
In the History of Northern Dynasties (Beishi), Biography of Sima Ziru, it is recorded: "The Prince of Xiang provided one open carriage drawn by quan-horned calves. The calf died on the road, and only the quan-shaped horns remained."
Also pronounced juǎn.
Also pronounced juàn (falling tone). The meaning is the same.
According to the Six Categories of Writing Rectified (Liushu Zheng'e), the form written as a different character is a vulgar variant and is incorrect.
