Explanation of Graphs (Shuowen Jiezi): This is stated to be the ancient form of the character for a round sacrificial vessel (gui). Detailed commentary can be found under the Bamboo Radical, eleven strokes.
Also, Tang Rhymes (Tangyun): Pronounced jiu.
Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Anthology (Yunhui): Pronounced qiu. The sound is the same as qiu. It is the name of a type of tree.
Proximity to Correctness (Erya), Section on Trees (Shimu): Records that the qiu tree resembles the plum tree. Commentary explains: The qiu tree is shaped like a plum tree; its fruit is about the size of a finger tip and is red like a small crabapple; it is edible.
Supplement to the Materia Medica (Bencao Buyi): States that the fruit of the qiu tree is the hawthorn, and they are one and the same.
