Explaining Characters (Shuowen): The ou is a water owl. Also known as yi.
Li Shizhen states: The ou is a creature that floats on the water, drifting lightly like foam. Also originally written as ou.
Liezi, Yellow Emperor Chapter (Liezi Huangdi pian): There was a man on the sea who loved seagulls. Every morning he went to the sea and associated with the seagulls. The seagulls that came reached into the hundreds and would not stop.
Annotation: The character used here is the same as ou.
Also, according to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced qu. It is a water bird.
