Also, according to the Approaching Correctness (Erya): Shigu, it refers to the remainder of something. The Guo commentary notes that in the regions of Chen and Zheng, this is called (niè), while in the regions of Jin and Wei, it is called (liè); both terms refer to the stump remaining after a tree has been felled. Furthermore, as written in the Eastern Capital Rhapsody (Dongjing fu) by Zhang Heng: there are no stumps left on the mountains. The commentary notes that a stump left by slanted cutting is called (chá), while a shoot growing from a felled tree is called (niè).
