Pronounced ren (falling tone).
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen jiezi), it means to bear in mind. It is formed from the radical for heart, with ren acting as the phonetic component. Xu Kai says, it refers to that which the heart bears within; in common parlance, this is how it is used. It also means to think or to ponder. In the Dian Yin by Ban Gu, it is written, to diligently ponder and apply physical effort.
