Chen Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Tree (mù). Kangxi strokes: 15. Page 549, Entry 29. Pronounced mi. It is a type of aromatic wood. The Materia Medica (Bencao) cites the Records of Southern Yue (Nanyuezhi) noting that in Jiaozhou there is a honey-scented tree. To obtain the spice, one must first cut through its roots. After one year, the outer bark rots, and the heartwood and branches become hard and black. That which sinks in water is agarwood. That which floats on the water and is flat is chicken-bone incense, and the coarsest is zhan incense.
