Pronounced mian
The pupil of the eye is black.

In the regions of Southern Chu, the Yangtze, and the Huai River, the black part of the eye is called mian.
Commentary: Lu (a term for black) means black. Mian describes a deep and distant appearance. It also refers to the appearance of a gaze filled with emotion.
Elegies of Chu (Chuci): Summoning the Soul (Zhaohun)
The facial features are delicate and the skin is smooth; how tranquil is their gaze filled with emotion.
Commentary: This refers to those women whose hearts are filled with affection, looking on stealthily from time to time, tranquil and attentive, with a resolve that cannot be shaken.
Also, mianmiao refers to the appearance of looking.
Guo Pu: Rhapsody on the Yangtze River (Jiangfu)
The River Consort withdraws her sorrowful expression and gazes intently.
