Chen Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Tree (mù) Entry: 檰 Kangxi Stroke Count: 18 Page 558, Entry 25 According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is pronounced mian. The mian tree bears fruit that resembles a chestnut. Furthermore, according to the Illustrated Classic of Materia Medica (Bencao Tujing) by Su Song, it is the eucommia tree. Its leaves are similar to those of the silkworm thorn tree, and when the bark is broken, white silk threads remain connected; in the region south of the Yangtze River, this is called mian. The young leaves that grow at the beginning of the season can be eaten and are called mian sprouts.
