Shuowen says it is the name of a county in You Fufeng. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes: "Shen Bo truly journeyed afar, the King saw him off at Mei." It is also a place name in Lu. In the Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan), Duke Zhuang 28th year: "In winter, Mei was built." The annotation states: "A lower settlement in Lu." According to Guangyun and Jiyun, it is also pronounced mèi, with the same meaning. Shuowen states it was originally written in a variant form, but commonly written as Mei.
