Mao Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Heart (xīn) Page 375, Entry 04 According to the Five Sounds Collected Rhymes (Wuyin Jiyun), it is pronounced le. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is defined as great merit. Another edition of the Jade Chapters defines it as contemplation. Note: In the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), there is only the character written with the Ten radical, defined as having the talent of ten men. The Jade Chapters contains both the version with the Ten radical and the version with the Heart radical; however, for the version with the Ten radical, it defines it as having the talent of ten men. For the version with the Heart radical, one edition defines it as having great merit, while another defines it as contemplation. It is likely that after the compilation of the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters, many additional characters were supplemented, and the version with the Ten radical and the version with the Heart radical should logically be distinguished. Because those who copied the texts made errors, and those who provided annotations compounded these errors, the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) discarded this character. When Han Xiaoyan included this character in the Five Sounds Collected Rhymes, he defined it both as having great merit and as having the talent of ten men, thereby confusing the version with the Heart radical with the version with the Ten radical.
