Explanation of Writing (Shuowen): Originally written as lian, referring to a sacrificial grain vessel known as the hu lian. Composed of the radical for wood, with lian providing the phonetic sound. Also written as lian.
Book of Rites (Liji), Bright Hall Positions (Mingtangwei): In the Xia dynasty there were four lian, in the Shang dynasty six hu, and in the Zhou dynasty eight gui.
Analects of Confucius (Lunyu): A vessel for millet and sacrificial grains in the ancestral temple.
