Tang Dynasty Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced liu (rising tone).
Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen): To kill.
Xu Kai stated: Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters does not contain the character Liu, though it appears as a component. This character is not seen in historical records and it is suspected to be the same as the character Liu. It is composed of Metal and You; the knife character is bent, and copyists mistakenly wrote it as Field. According to the Jade Compendium (Yupian), this is an ancient form of the character Liu.
Also, Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced liu (falling tone). In Liangzhou, a cauldron is called a liu.
Yangzi's Dialects (Fangyan): A steamer, known in the regions east of the pass as a culiu.
