According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the Rhyme Assembly (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced liu. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is a curved-beam fish trap used by a widow, a place where fish are retained. According to the Literary Expositor (Erya), in the section Explaining Teachings (Shixun), everything that is curved is called a liu. The commentary states that anything made of bamboo strips as a fish trap is called a liu. In the section Explaining Vessels (Shiqi), a widow's fish trap is called a liu. The commentary by Sun Yan states: It has a curved beam and is easy to construct, which is why it is called a widow's fish trap; it is not actually made by a widow. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), within the Minor Odes (Xiaoya) section, it is written: Fish caught in the liu. It is also written in a variant form (liu).
