Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Dictionary of Rhymes (Yunhui), Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced lian (falling tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): A type of tree.
Wings of the Erya (Erya yi): The tree grows over one zhang tall. Its leaves are lush, resembling the leaves of a locust tree but sharper. In the third or fourth lunar month, it blooms with red-purple flowers. The fruit resembles small bells, hence the name golden bell fruit. It is commonly known as bitter lian, or also called bell-container. The fruit can be used to wash clothing, which is how it earned its name.
Huainanzi (Huainanzi), Chapter on Seasonal Rules (Shize xun): In the seventh month, the warehouse official is in charge, and the representative tree is the lian tree. Note: The fruit of the lian tree is the food consumed by the phoenix.
Miscellaneous Records of Donggao (Donggao zalu): Winds that arrive in accordance with the flowering periods exist; the plum blossom wind is the earliest, and the lian blossom wind is the latest. There are twenty-four such flowering signal winds in total, and after the lian blossom wind, the cold air has completely departed.
Chronicles of Customs of Jing-Chu (Jingchu suishiji): Flood dragons fear the lian tree, which is why on the Dragon Boat Festival, leaves of the lian tree are used to wrap rice dumplings, which are then cast into the river as an offering to Qu Yuan.
