According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it describes the appearance of rain stopping and clouds clearing. It is composed of the radical for rain and the phonetic component for outer city wall. According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it describes clouds dissipating.
Also, in the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), it is defined as the melting of snow.
Furthermore, in the Huainanzi, Astronomical Treatise (Huainanzi Tianwen Xun), it is stated: The Dao begins in the void and vast expanse, and the void and vast expanse produces the universe.
According to the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), it means expansive and open. It is commonly written in a variant form (liáokuò).
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced huò. The meaning is the same.
