Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Rhyme Assembly (Yunhui) cite the fǎnqiè (phonetic spelling) as qiú plus wèi. Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) cites it as jù plus wèi. The pronunciation is the same as the character kuì. Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines this as: A box or chest. The character structure is derived from the radical Box (fāng) with guì as the phonetic component. Causes of the Six Scripts (Liushu Gu) states: Nowadays, large containers used for storing items are generally called guì, medium-sized ones are called xiá, and small ones are called dú.
