"Jun, means group. It is where people gather in groups." — Shiming
In the Zhou Dynasty system, the Son of Heaven governed an area of a thousand li in circumference, divided into one hundred counties (xian). Each county had four commanderies (jun), making the county large and the commandery small. After Qin unified the empire, it established thirty-six commanderies to govern these counties. The Han Dynasty followed this system. Since the Sui and Tang dynasties, the establishment and abolition of commanderies have varied. In the Song and Yuan dynasties, prefectures (zhou) were established at the level of commanderies, and in the Ming Dynasty, prefectures were subordinate to prefectures, thus the name commandery was abolished.
