According to Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is the same as Jie. According to Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it is pronounced jia. According to Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced jia. According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a grain sheaf with the husk removed, used as a mat for sacrifices to heaven. According to Book of Rites (Liji), in the chapter Ritual Vessels (Liqi), it states: The comfort of sedge mats, and the arrangement of grain straw mats. The commentary notes: Grain spikes with the grains removed are called jie. Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) mentions bi-jie. Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun) notes that the original form is jie. It is also written in a variant form.
