According to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is jia.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to grain stalks with the skin removed, used to make mats for sacrifices to heaven.
In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji): Fengshan Book, it is noted that in ancient times, when performing the Feng and Shan sacrifices, the ground was swept clean for the ritual, and the mats were made of pickled vegetables and grain stalks.
Additionally, according to the Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is jie. The meaning is the same. Sometimes also written in a variant form (jie) or in a variant form (ge).
