Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): To instruct or enlighten.
Xu says: To warn and instruct earnestly, as if clearing away darkness and obscurity.
Yupian: To teach or demonstrate.
Guangyun: To instruct or admonish.
Book of Changes (Yijing), Commentary on the Appended Phrases: To be careless in storing valuables invites theft, and an overly provocative appearance invites licentiousness.
Book of Documents (Shangshu), Charge to Yue (Shuoming): Present instructions morning and evening to support my virtue.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes (Xiaoya): Instruct and teach your children, that they may emulate what is good.
Also pronounced yi (falling tone).
Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes (Daya): Not instructing, not teaching; these are the women and eunuchs.

Qin, Mount Tai Inscription: Rising early and retiring late, establishing long-term benefits, exclusively emphasizing instruction and guidance. Propagating the scriptures and declaring them clearly, that far and near might all be brought into order, all upholding the sage's will. These three phrases are in rhyme.
Wu Yu, Rhyme Supplement (Yunbu): In ancient times, the wei rhyme group was interchangeable with the zhi rhyme group.
