Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters): To embroider with five colors.
Xiao Erya (Small Approach to Elegant Language): Mixed colors are called hui.
Yupian (Jade Chapters): Painted colors.
Analects (Lunyu): The business of painting comes after the plain background.
He Yan's Commentary: Hui means to paint patterns.
Explanatory Text: Originally also written in a variant form (kui).

Book of Documents (Shujing), Yi and Ji chapter: The sun, moon, stars, mountains, dragons, and flowery creatures are used to make the hui.
