Pronounced hua.
In the dictionary Yu Pian (Jade Chapters), it is described as a hualiu, a fine horse. It was one of the eight steeds of King Mu of Zhou. Refer to the entry for the character liu for further details.
Sometimes written in a variant form. In the Book of Master Lie (Liezi), Chapter on King Mu of Zhou, it is written: On the right, harnessed with a liuli, and on the left with a lüer. Refer to the note on the character in the Grass radical section for further details.
Also used interchangeably with the character hua. In the History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Treatise on Geography, it states: The teams of hualiu and lüer. The commentary notes that this is the same as hua.
The Zhengzitong (Correction of Characters) states that this was the original form.
