According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), pronounced he; according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), pronounced he, read as hao. It refers to eyes overlapping. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Jing Ke: Qin Shi Huang cherished Gao Jianli for his skill in playing the zhu, and specifically pardoned him, then caused his eyes to become blind. The Investigation of Hidden Matters (Suoyin) notes that horse dung was used to fumigate him, causing him to lose his sight. Sima also reads this as jue.
