Xu Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Gate (mén) Hui Kangxi stroke count: 20 Page 1342, Entry 04 Guangyun (Broad Rhymes) and Jiyun (Collection of Rhymes) and Zhengyun (Correct Rhymes) state the pronunciation is hui (falling tone). Shuowen (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters) states it is the outer gate of a marketplace. Guangyun states huan-hui means marketplace gate. Zhang Heng in Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu) writes: Passing through the huan and leading through the hui. Commentary states: The gate of a marketplace is called hui. Also means a road. Bow ya (Broad Elegantia) states huan-hui means a road. Also, according to Jiyun, it is pronounced kui (falling tone). The meaning is the same.
