Explained in Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) as a small coffin. The Book of Han: Annals of Emperor Gao (Qianhan Gao di ji) records an order to have those who died in military service buried in small coffins and sent back to their home counties. The commentary states that a small coffin is what is meant by a hui. Also pronounced wei (falling tone). Pronounced the same as the character for guard (wei). Also pronounced hui (falling tone).
