Hai Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Bird (niǎo). Character: Geng. Kangxi stroke count: 19. Page 1493, Entry 24. Pronounced gēng. Cang-geng is a type of bird. It is larger than a myna, with yellow feathers, and wings and tail feathers featuring alternating black and yellow colors. The male and female fly together, and its call sounds like a weaving loom. It is also written in the variant form cang-geng. Classic of Poetry (Erya), section on birds: Cang-geng is also known as li-huang. Book of Rites (Liji), monthly ordinances: In the second lunar month, the cang-geng sings. Zhengzitong dictionary: The cang-geng is the oriole. Those that fly in pairs, relying on one another, are called orioles. Because they are yellow with black markings, they are called li-huang; because their call is a melodious chirping, they are called yellow warblers. The commentaries on the Book of Odes (Shijing) state: In some places, it is called huang-li-liu, and in others, it is called huang-pao.
