Shuowen Jiezi (Dictionary of Explanations and Analysis of Characters): The main rope of a net.
Book of Documents (Shangshu), Chapter Pan Geng: Like a net with its main rope, having order and not becoming tangled.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes: The principles and order of the four directions. Commentary: Stretching it out creates the main rope. Sub-commentary: The gang is the large rope of a net.
Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), Village Archery Ritual: Then stretch the lower rope of the target. Commentary: The gang is the rope that holds the tongue of the target.
