Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Treatise on Rites (Lishu): Suspending one bell, one still taps the frame.
Commentary: The Suoyin states: The frame is the rack for suspending bells and chimes. One does not strike the bell but taps the frame; it is said that one does not seek its sound but rather its fundamental quality.
Xunzi, Discussion on Rites (Lilun pian): Suspending one bell, one still taps its frame, with red strings and resonant sound holes.
Also, according to Orthography of Rimes (Zhengyun), it is also written in the variant form ge. Pingyuan has a Ge county; therefore, the people of Jin referred to bad wine as the Pingyuan supervisor of post stations, because it only sits above the ge.
