Tang Rhyme (Tángyùn): gǔhé qiē. Collected Rhymes (Jíyùn), Rhyme Compendium (Yùnhuì): gèhé qiē. Correct Rhymes (Zhèngyùn): gè'é qiē. Sound: gé.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì): To obstruct. Yupian (Yùpiān): To block, to stop up.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shǐjì), Annals of Qin Shihuang: "To prevent separation between inside and outside." Book of Han (Hànshū), Biography of Chang Hui: "Wished to cut off from Han."
Also interchangeably used as 鬲 (lì/gé). Xunzi (Xúnzǐ), Chapter on General Principles: "Like being cut off." Annotation: Refers to being cut off from above. Records of the Grand Historian (Shǐjì), Account of Dayuan: "Obstructed the Han road." Book of Han (Hànshū), Biography of Xue Xuan: "The western regions were cut off."
Also, Lu Que's (Lù Jué) letter to Shen Yue (Shěn Yuē): "The writings of one family, skilled and unskilled, are separated by a gulf."
Also, Rhyme Compendium Supplement (Yùnhuì Xiǎobǔ): Rhymes with qìdé qiē, sound: gài.
Liu Zongyuan's (Liú Zōngyuán) "Rhapsody on Repentance for Blame": "Slander and jealousy take root, yet there is no warning; still obstinate in what is held. The situation is perilous and suspicious, full of deceit; encountering separation between heaven and earth."
According to Zhengzitong (Zhèngzìtōng), the citation from Liu Zongyuan's rhapsody states that its rhyme is zhìyùn (falling tone rhyme), pronounced yì, which is certainly incorrect. And the Rhyme Compendium Supplement's statement that it rhymes with qìdé qiē is also erroneous. The character dé is in the zhí (entering tone) rhyme group, and zhí is in the jí (entering tone) rhyme group. The zhí and jí rhyme groups are not interchangeable. Therefore, for gé to rhyme with zhí, it should not be pronounced qìdé qiē.
Also interchangeable with róng. Records of the Grand Historian (Shǐjì), Annals of Qin Shihuang: "Clearly separating inside and outside, nothing was impure, extending to future generations." Annotation: Gé (隔) is sometimes written as róng (融).
