Pronounced gu (falling tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): An enclosure for cattle and horses.
Book of Changes (Yijing), Hexagram Da Chu: A yoke for a young ox; great auspiciousness.
Commentary: Situated at the beginning of the Gen hexagram, acting appropriately according to one's position, and being able to restrain the firm, initial yang line—or blocking this initial yang—means there is no need to use an ox's horns. Therefore, one uses a young ox that has not yet grown horns, attaching a crossbar to prevent its agitation.
Book of Documents (Shujing), Oath of Fei (Feishi): Now you must release the cattle and horses from the enclosure.
Commentary: Now, soldiers must release the cattle and horses that are being kept in the enclosure in large numbers.
