Pronounced geng. A variant form of geng (sometimes written as geng). According to popular usage, it is erroneously written as geng. See the detailed note on geng above. Also pronounced gen.
Songs of the South (Chuci): Tightening the zithers and beating the drums in unison. Note: Geng means to stretch the strings tightly. Also written as geng.
Also in the poem Summoning the Soul (Zhaohun): With beautiful appearance and elegant manners, filling the inner chambers. Note: Geng means to span or fill. Also written as geng.
Also in the History of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu): Extending north to the Bright Palace and spanning the Changle Palace. Note: Regarding geng, the Selections of Refined Literature (Wenxuan) uses gen. The commentary by Li Shan states that gen and geng are ancient interchangeable characters.
