Pronounced fang (rising tone)
Erya (Erya): Explaining Birds: The fang is the marshal of the marshlands.
Guo Commentary: The bird of the marshes resembles a water owl, dark and black in color. It dwells constantly in the marshes and, upon seeing a person, it immediately cries out and refuses to leave. It resembles an official in charge of guarding the grounds, hence its name. Common folk call it the field-protecting bird.
Also, Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Classified Dictionary (Leipian): Pronounced fang (rising tone). The meaning is the same.
In the Explaining Graphs (Shuowen) it is written as a variant form.
