Pronounced fei (rising tone)
A type of tree. The fruit is edible and can be used to treat tapeworm infections.
Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao): Regarding the fruit of the fei tree, Tao Hongjing states that it is produced in the various commanderies of Dongyang.
Also, according to the Expanded Meaning of the Erya (Erya Yi): The fei tree resembles the fir tree but its wood is lustrous and its grain resembles the cypress; in ancient times it was known as decorative wood. It is also written in a variant form (fei).
The Xing Commentary: The Erya considers the pei and the shan to be the same plant, which differs from the assertion in the Expanded Meaning of the Erya (Erya Yi).
Textual Research: According to the Tang Rhymes (Tang Yun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), the pronunciation is listed as fu wei, resulting in the sound kuang. We have corrected this to fei (rising tone) to align with the pronunciation indicated by the characters fu wei.
