The crossbar at the front of a carriage shaft, used to fit around a horse's neck.
Book of Rites (Zhouli), section on Winter Official, Artificers Record (Kaogongji): The weight borne by the yoke. Commentary: The weight borne by the yoke refers to the part between two yokes. Sub-commentary: When a carriage is drawn by two horses, each horse is fitted with one yoke. The function of the yoke is to secure the horse's neck so it cannot break free.
