According to the Tang Dynasty Rhymes (Tangyun), the pronunciation is based on the characters luo and hou, sounding similar to lou. It means a small hole or opening. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is defined as a tiny crack. According to the Tang Dynasty Rhymes and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), there is another pronunciation based on the characters dang and hou, sounding similar to dou, which has the same meaning as the former. The Collected Rhymes further provides a supplementary explanation stating that one source defines it as to cut open. It is sometimes also written in a variant form.
