Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Lord Pingyuan: Yu Qing wore straw sandals and carried a deng to persuade the King Xiaocheng of Zhao.
Commentary: A deng is a hat with a long handle.
Commentary to Jijiupian: Deng and li are both used to protect against rain. A large one with a handle that is carried by hand while walking is called a deng. A small one without a handle worn on the head while walking is called a li.
Guyishi, Yueyaoge: You carry the deng, I ride the horse; when we meet again another day, I will dismount for you.
