Hai Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Bird (niǎo). Di. Kangxi strokes: 25. Page 1503, Entry 32. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced di. According to the Erya, a dictionary of classical terms (Erya), in the chapter interpreting birds (Shi niao), the di is a mountain pheasant. Guo commentary states it is the long-tailed variety. The sub-commentary states the mountain pheasant is also called di, commonly known as the mountain chicken today. Li Shizhen says that the common pheasant lives in the plains and fields, while the di lives in the mountains and forests, hence it receives the name mountain; the larger ones are called qiao. Also, according to the Records of Forgotten Matters (Shiyiji) by Wang Zinian, when Emperor Yao was on the throne, north of Feather Mountain there was a bird that sang beautifully, with a human face and a bird's beak, eight wings and one foot, plumage like a pheasant, which did not touch the ground when walking. It was called the green di. Its voice resembled bells, chimes, mouth organs, and reed pipes. Worldly talk says: when the green di sings, the age is peaceful. Also, according to the Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced zhuo. The meaning is the same. It was originally written as di. Common usage added the bird radical.
