Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Pronounced deng (falling tone). Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced deng (falling tone). A small hillside. Raised steps are called deng, which refers to the passage between pavilions. Zhang Heng, Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu): The deng passages wind and connect, extending toward the true east. It also refers to a small water embankment where a stream divides. Zuo Si, Rhapsody on the Capital of Wei (Weidu Fu): There are twelve deng streams, all originating from the same source but flowing through different outlets. Li Shan says: Below Ye City there are twelve deng channels; the Heavenly Well Weir is located southwest of the city, where the water flow divides into twelve paths. Also, Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced deng (level tone). Deng-deng is the sound of building a wall. Deng is interchangeable with the character meaning mountain path (deng).
