Pronounced cí. Originally written as 礠. Simplified by adopting the character (zī).
According to the Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen): A type of stone. It can attract needles.
According to the Materia Medica (Bencao): When iron is found on the sunny side of a mountain, there must be magnetic stone on the shady side, for these two substances share the same vitality.
Selection of Refined Literature (Wenxuan), Cao Zhi's Poem Expressing Ambition: Magnetic stone attracts iron, yet today they remain unattached.
Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijingzhu): The Hao River passes north to the west of the Han Ling Terrace, and also passes to the west of Magnetic Stone Gate, which is located in front of Epang Palace.
Also, according to the Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui): A prefecture name. Located in the ancient territory of Handan, it was established as Ci Prefecture during the Sui dynasty, changed to Hui Prefecture during the Tang dynasty, and subsequently returned to the name Ci.
In the History of the Former Han (Qianhan), Art and Literature Treatise, it is written as (cí).
