According to the Discourses of the States (Guoyu), specifically the chapter quoting Li Ge: trees on the mountain should not have their sprouts felled. The commentary on the Classic of History (Shujing) states that to "kan" means to cut and prune trees. Also, pronounced cha. The meaning is the same. It also refers to a wooden raft. It is synonymous with the character for cha. See the entry for the character cha.
