Ancient form. Pronounced zhui. To hang down from above. Book of Changes (Yijing): The Yellow Emperor, Yao, and Shun wore hanging robes and the world was well-governed. Book of Odes (Shijing): With hanging sash and severe air.
Also, to spread or circulate. Book of the Later Han (Houhanshu): To pass down one's merit and fame to bamboo and silk.
Also written as a variant form (chui). Refers to the edge of a hall near the steps. Book of Documents (Shangshu): One man wearing a crown and holding a lance stood at the eastern edge. One man wearing a crown and holding a dagger-axe stood at the western edge. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji): I have heard that a person of great wealth does not sit at the edge of the hall.
Also refers to a border. Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan): Ravaging our border. History of the Former Han (Hanshu): At present, all the borders are at peace.
Also a place name. Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu): The Duke of Song and the Duke of Wei met at Chui. Note: Chui is a place in the state of Wei, located northeast of Juyang County in Jiyin. Spring and Autumn Annals: Zhong Sui died at Chui. Note: A place in the state of Qi.
Also pronounced zhui. A village name. Located in the county.
Also pronounced rui. Book of Documents (Shangshu): Chui was in charge of public works. Lu Deming reads it this way.
Also means to be about to or to approach. Du Fu wrote the poem Parting in Old Age.
