Pronounced chi. According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters), it means to beat or strike. In the Zuo Zhuan (Zuo Tradition), it says to beat one's servant to display them to the public. The commentary notes that this means to whip. In the seventeenth year of Duke Xiang, Zihan personally took up a switch to oversee the builders and beat those who were not diligent. Also pronounced zhi and zhi. The meaning is the same.
