Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters): To plaster the ground. In the Book of Rites (Liji): The Emperor has a red terrace.
Xu says: The ground upon the steps. According to the Han dynasty system, there were green carvings and red terraces.
Dianzhi states: Using vermilion lacquer on the ground is therefore called a red terrace. Stone stairs made of jade are called jade terraces.
Yang Juyuan's poem: There is no cause to follow the hundred beasts, dancing in unison on the red terrace.
